gen|tian «JEHN shuhn», noun.
1. any one of a large group of plants with funnel-shaped flowers, usually stemless leaves, and bitter juice, including the fringed gentian, the closed gentian, and the agueweed. Gentians have blue, white, red, or yellow flowers.
2. any one of certain similar plants of other genera.
3. the bitter root of one of these plants of southern and central Europe, or a preparation of this root, used in medicine as a tonic and a stomachic.
